Smalland Survive the Wilds Mounts Guide (Colors & How to get them)
Welcome to our Smalland Survive the Wilds Mounts Guide (Colors & How to get them). Please note that some colorations of mounts spawn in the same locations! You can try getting the one you want to spawn by checking back later after you’ve killed or tamed the one you found in its place (you may need to try this several times). Alternatively, you can try loading a new map save (your character’s map annotations and tree base will carry over) if you don’t want to wait for the creature to respawn.
For all rideable and tameable creatures, you must attack your desired target and bring them down to low health. An Icon should then pop up telling you to press “F” (or your assigned key) to feed the creature a treat! You will find the requirements for each type of treat in each section of this guide.
Grasshoppers (6)
- How to Tame
Grasshopper treats are unlocked after building a Workbench, and are crafted at a Cauldron! You will need 3 Insect Eggs, 1 Petal, and 2 Seed Oil.
- Green Grasshopper
This is the smallest and most common version of this mount!
This mount can be found near the base of the first Great Tree, on the opposite side from where the Elder lives. They can also be found in various places around the central area of the map, frequently around the bases of other Great Trees. - Dark Grasshopper
Slightly larger than its green counterpart, this mottled grey grasshopper has a pretty high speed stat! Although, sprinting doesn’t seem to be the grasshopper’s strongest feature. This version can be found above the North-East corner of the Swamp, just under the Greylands. You will see big tree roots and a broken fence corner in the vicinity.
- Amber Grasshopper
Larger than both the Green and Dark Grasshoppers, this version has gorgeously varied colors! The level they spawn at seems to be a bit higher, as well.
This mount can be found south of the large mushroom forest, at the edge of the pond occupied by a frog and a damselfly.
Another also spawns in the Forbidden Lands, on the East side of the huge tree in the middle. - Red Gold Grasshopper
Very similar in color to the Wine Red grasshopper, this version has golden wings and a cream colored underside! - The hidden location for this mount is near the NPC Skadi. Head East from their location until you find a Great Tree. There is a cave underneath a tree root on the Eastern side, hard to miss if you carefully circle around it!
Wine Red and Blood Red Grasshoppers
The largest and highest level version of the grasshopper mount! Can be found just after progressing the story into the Forbidden Lands. There are two different versions that spawn in the same place here; one is a lighter, more Pink-Red, and the other is a much deeper Red.These mounts can easily be found once exiting the tunnel that leads to the Forbidden Lands!
Beware of Un-tamables!Lubbers are insects that have a striking resemblance to Grasshoppers. Take care not to confuse them! They have a few features that set them apart, such as thicker heads and transparent wings. Note that Lubbers are aggressive and will attack you, and Grasshoppers are passive until attacked!
At night, there are also “Nocturnal Grasshoppers” that will spawn in locations around the central area of the map. Though they look like a super sick metal version of their brightly colored cousins, they are unfortunately not tame-able.
Geckos (9)
- How to Tame
Gecko Treats are unlocked after defeating the Rhino Beetle boss, and turning in the Horn to the NPC Skadi. They are crafted at a Cauldron, and require 2 Ant Heads, 2 Bee Heads, 1 Petal, and 2 Seed Oil.
- Beach Gecko
Commonly found on the southern beaches of the central part of the map! - Black Cave Gecko
A hidden variation found in a cave not far from the game’s first boss. This is the darkest version of the gecko that comes with two sub-versions. One version has a Blue underbelly, and the other has a Green underbelly.Head East from the Rhino Beetle marker along the beach, and keep an eye out for the cave opening. Watch out for the deep puddles inside!
* Note that this version spawns in the same spot as the Green Cave Gecko, and you may have to slay it a few times to get the version you need to spawn. - Stone Grey Gecko
Another, more monotone variation of the Gecko that also spawns at a higher level than the common version! There are two sub-variations of this color. One has a dark grey underbelly, and one has a pink underbelly. This version can be found on the right side of the river that divides the south beach. Head East from the divide, following the curve of the beach until you see the entrance to a stone cave. The gecko spawns in near the back!
* Note that this version spawns in the same spot as the Albino Gecko, and you may have to slay it a few times to get the version you need to spawn. - Albino Gecko
With a very subtle pink underside and tail, this Gecko is the closest to being one solid color, mostly covered in white! This version can be found on the right side of the river that divides the south beach. Head East from the divide, following the curve of the beach until you see the entrance to a stone cave. The gecko spawns in near the back!
* Note that this version spawns in the same spot as the Stone Grey Gecko, and you may have to slay it a few times to get the version you need to spawn. Rust Gecko
A uniquely red colored gecko that can be found just above the beach area! It is currently bugged inside of its spawn, so you’ll need to bring along another gecko to get it out.- This version can be found in a cave just above the “Stone Gecko” cave. When you arrive, the Gecko will likely be stuck inside it’s spawn. You can use “V” to spot it. You cannot cross into the spawn by yourself. The black fog is a “door” that only the spawnable entities can pass. While riding a Gecko you are technically a “Gecko” and can pass into it. Once you tamed it, you can ride it outside.
[Map Coming Soon] Night Gecko
A black, splotchy-spotted gecko found at the end of a very long, unique glowing tunnel. It spawns at level 98, so the trip is worth considering.- This version can be found by taking a long hike underground. The Cave Entrance is located on the beach southwest of the NPC Skadi. The entrance is the same as the two cave geckos, though this time, you need to hug the wall behind the waterbug in order to find the smaller entrance to the tunnel. Follow it all the way to the end to find the Night Gecko. Be warned, there are some mild enemies scattered around on the way there. I recommend being stocked up on provisions for the trip as well.
- Golden Gecko
A black gecko with a Golden underbelly found in the depths of the sewers. This gecko spawns at level 100! I have had considerable trouble getting it back out of the sewer, so this poor screenshot is all I have at the moment. - To get to this special gecko, enter the sewers and start making your way down. There is a new pathway that has opened up behind a thickly webbed tunnel guarded by a black widow. There are a few different paths to take, but most other options will either dead-end or start to lead back up. If you keep going down and in the direction indicated on the map below, you should be able to find your way to it.
Spiders (5)
- How to Tame
Wolf Spider Treats are unlocked after defeating the Albino Spider boss and turning in its eye to the NPC Lisandra. They are crafted at the Cauldron, and require 1 Grasshopper Leg, 2 Spider Eyes, 3 Insect Wings, 1 Petal, and 2 Seed Oil.
Brown Wolf Spider
Found in the swamp biome, this handsome lil guy is quite common. If you didn’t already know, the swamp biome covers the area indicated below.
Grey Wolf Spider
The smallest and most nimble of the spider mounts! Every time I’ve come across this lil guy, he always seems much quicker than the other spiders! There are two versions of this one that spawn at the same locations; one is Grey with Brown stripes, one is Grey with Black stripes. This version can be found on the West end of the swamp, near the edge. There are 2 dragonflies and a Toad nearby, so use caution when trying to catch it! There is also a second location at the edge of the map, not much further away.
- Black Wolf Spider
The largest and darkest of the spider mounts, and quite possibly my personal favorite. >;D There are two sub-versions of this spider; one has Red stripes, and the other has Brown stripes. The Black Wolf Spider can be found in the center of the swamp, around some candles and other wolf spiders. There is also a second location just South of that one, at the base of a bunch of branches.
Damselfly (1)
- How to Tame
Damselfly Treats are unlocked after returning the Ancient Clover Seal to the Elder. They are crafted at the Stone Oven, and require 3 Firefly Juice, 1 Petal, and 2 Seed Oil.
- Teal Damselfly
Basically a hoverbike, don’t expect to be crossing the skies on the Damselfly. Still, its bright colors are quite nice to look at.
Damselflies can be found near water in several places around the map. You can find one near the Amber Grasshopper, at the pond South of the large mushroom forest.
Hornets (2)
- How to Tame
Hornet Treats are unlocked after speaking to the Historian at the old ruined Chapel. They are crafted at the Stone Oven, and require 3 Colony Spider Abdomens, 1 Petal, and 2 Seed Oil.
- Common Hornet
Found as a common threat in both the North-West corner and South-East corner of the map, this brightly colored buzzer is your best/easiest option for flight (Blue Tit bird aside). The hornets can be found in the Greylands around the Black Hornet boss marker, as well as in the South near the Librarian and ruined church area.
- Black Hornet
This handsome hornet resembles the Black Hornet boss! They are the highest level mount currently found in the game (Blue Tit bird aside). This version of the Hornet can only be found by progressing the Story into the Forbidden Lands. There are a few that spawn quite close to the secret tunnel, though they can be found all throughout the area.
Birds (1)
- How to Tame
The Blue Tit cannot be tamed with treats! Spoiler Warning! You will need to find the Blue Tit egg item in the game first by breaking a Nest Cage found on a Birds Nest. Save up 500 Hoots (Coins) and then talk to Malik and trade in your Blue Tit Egg and 500 Hoots for a pet Blue Tit.
- Blue Tit
The Blue Tit can be found by progressing the Story into the Forbidden Lands, and will run you a costly 500 Hoots. Pictures coming soon.
[]
One Blue Tit nest can be found to the East, on top of the wooden playground set. Follow the curly slide up to the top, and continue up along a wooden plank to the end of the beam the swing hangs from. Another nest can be found to the West, near the broken down car. You can climb the light pole behind the car and glide down to the branch it is sitting on for easy access.
