Survive Threat Echoes
A Threat Echo is when you pick up a tape that causes you to shoot yourself.
If you pick up a regular tape and the voice clip sounds distressed and suicidal, it is a Threat Echo.
It will also give an on-screen text warning near the end of the tape, but do not wait for text or it will likely be too late.
When you pick up the tape, quickly empty your firearm of all ammunition.
A HOLSTERED FIREARM WILL BE UN-HOLSTERED AND MUST BE UNLOADED
Revolvers
- R to open cylinder
- V to dump cartridges
- Opening cylinder is not enough, you will die if the cylinder isn’t completely empty.
Auto-Loaders
- E to remove magazine
- R to eject cartridge from chamber
- Activating safety does not help, gun must have an empty chamber. (maybe magazine loaded but empty chamber is ok?)
NOTE
I found that, if the words appear with a semi, you can still survive if you’re quick. Eject and drop the mag, and before the gun is your way, fire it so the final bullet is gone. You can’t rack the slide once you see the words, so it’s the only option.
If you’ve seen the words with a revolver, you can only really pull the trigger twice in my experience, so it’s much better to empty if you’re safe before the end of the tape, especially since at the end it tries to fire every shot
From my 4 echo recoveries so far, the threat only operates what’s on your gun. It doesn’t reach for your inventory for cartridges.
Just be aware when you hear sad and slow voices. Just strip the entire gun if you see the word threat taking control.
Be warned there are some cases of magazines just disappearing, so make sure your floor is flat before you drop your mag. Don’t drop a full mag on top of a pipe like I did
If you have an auto loader (like the Beretta 92) with an empty chamber but a bullet in the magazine, then the Threat Echo will rack the slide back without your input; you have to remove your magazine as well. You can see this in the launch trailer.
