Xross Dreams Characters Inspiration Guide

At its current incarnation, a brief description of how to play each character to decide which one suites your style, or which one matches a style you already know how to play. Each section will attempt to have a brief explanation of how they play (with controls).

Fighter – Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo

Perhaps the most well known of puzzle arcade fighters, Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo has you control a pair of multi-colored blocks to create larger blocks until you get a crash block to destroy a same colored set of connected blocks.

If you like this style of game, see also Crystal Crisis or Puzzle Kombat (from Mortal Kombat Deception).

A/B – Rotate Piece
C – Change junk attack style

Robot – Puyo Puyo

A big thanks to HolyBatman for pointing out Robot’s style

Puyo Puyo is similar to Puzzle Fighter in that you are given a a set of blocks, but there are several differences. In Puzzle Fighter, you are only given a pair of blocks, where in Puyo Puyo, you may be given a set of two, three, or even four blocks at a time. Additionally, instead of having a crash block to destroy your set up blocks, you need to match four or more blocks of the same color in order to destroy them.

A/B/C – Rotate piece

Goddess – Columns

Thank you HolyBadman for identifying the inspiration

Columns is a match-3 style of game, where you are given a set of three blocks and must match them horizontally, vertically, or diagonally by color to destroy them. You may cycle through the set of three blocks you are given in order to create the matches you need.

A/B – Cycle piece
C – Use meter (once filled)

Journey – OG, designed to be easy

Thank you BoatsAndJoes for identifying this

Admittedly, not sure if I have a grasp on this fully, seems to be a basic match 2+ where you are grabbing colors and making a match on your sidebar to eliminate pieces, failed matches will send the collected blocks back to the board.

A/B/C – grab designated block relative to the location of the selected columns of blocks

Astronaut – OG, designed for supergeniuses

Thank you BoatdAndJoes for identifying this one and O Deus, BarcoLixo for a better description.

This is a bit more complex, there are three directional pieces you are looking to place to clear the board: purple for horizontal, blue for vertical, and gold for both directions. either through basic directions or power-ups such as the four-directional block or the rocket, to clear the board. Your clears will be stopped if an item that doesn’t clear in the direction is in the path. (i.e horizontal clears will stop when running into a blue arrow and vice versa). You clears will also be stopped if there’s no filler items (like some of the circular pieces that you’ll be given).

A/B – drag selected piece in field to an empty spot, should there be one available
C – Drop piece

Skeleton – Pochi and Nyaa – Xross Dreams Characters Inspiration Guide

(from the designer of Puyo Puyo, and the last game Compile made before they dissolved)

Thank you BoatsAndJoes for identifying and describing this one

Description updated thanks to HolyBadman: Seems very mixed between Puyo Puyo and Puzzle Fighter style, where pieces are connected and eliminated horizontally or vertically, the big difference being instead of waiting for a crush block, you are using the C button to make the crush block come to you. If you create a crush block that does not connect to anything after some time (time or turn based?), it will turn into a garbage block.

A/B – Rotate piece
C – Change between bone and skull pieces

Thinker – Magical Drop

Thinker is inspired by Magical Drop, where you grab colored pieces and then toss them back up to the playing field to create 3+ matches quickly, with the gameplay allowing for rapid setups and chain reactions.

Due to the fast paced nature of the game, this has a few more Discord servers for strategy and training outside of the Puzzle Wednesday Discord.

If you like this style of game, see also Money Puzzle Exchanger.

A – Grab bubbles(s)
B – Release bubble(s)
C – Lower row

Comet – Kirby Star Stacker – – Xross Dreams Characters Inspiration Guide

Kirby Star Stacker is a falling block puzzle game in the style of Puzzle Fighter or Puyo Puyo, the main difference being that you are sandwiching star blocks horizontally or vertically between designated blocks (in the case of this game, planets) to eliminate them.

A/B/C – Rotate piece

Hive – Panel de Pon – Xross Dreams Characters Inspiration Guide

Panel de Pon is a tile swapping match 3+ game where you swap tiles on a horizontal plane to create matches horizontally or vertically to eliminate blocks. Some of you might have played this game through Pokemon Puzzle League.

A/B – Swap tiles
C – Raise row

Dinosaur – Puzzle Bobble

Possibly one of the other most well known puzzle games, Puzzle Bobble is a match 3+ game where you shoot colored bubbles up into a field of other colored bubbles to clear the field.

A – Shoot bubble
B/C – precision directions for those tight shots

Bear – Tetris

It’s Tetris

Currently the character seems to only be selectable through random select, guide will update once a more permanent method is discovered

  1. To select Bear and Big Bear, you just have to press up 7 times on the character select screen in VS/Online. (Big) Bear isn’t pickable anywhere else
