The mission Outlaws from the West is the first part of Red Dead Redemption 2 Chapter one. This guide highlights mission strategies and Gold Medal requirements.

Medal Checklist
- Take no damage during the shootout
- Loot 6 or more items from Adler Ranch
- Complete with at least 80% accuracy
Red Dead Redemption 2 opens with you, Arthur, leading a small caravan of despondent people through a snowstorm. Something unfortunate has happened, and your group has lost a few people. Though you’ve found shelter for now, you must search for food.
Your first task is to follow Dutch through the snow on horseback. Follow the prompts to get the feel of controlling your horse.
Here’s a quick rundown:
- Hold X/A to keep pace.
- Double tap X/A to go faster.
- Press R1 to slow the horse down.
- Use the left stick to control the horse.
- Press L2 to speak.
- Press the touchpad to change perspective, between first person and third person,
Eventually, Micah will intersect your path. He’s found an occupied house that may help you. Continue to follow the prompts as you follow him.
Once you reach the house, lead the horse to the hitching post and press Triangle/Y to tie it there. While following Dutch on foot, he tells you and Micah to hide as not to intimidate the people inside.
Hide in the cattle shed on the left. Press R1 to crouch down.
As Dutch converses with people at the door, Micah makes a chilling discovery – there is a body in the wagon he’s hidden behind.
Ready your gun by holding L1 to bring up the Weapons Wheel, and choose the revolver at the top. Now aim at the man closest to Dutch with L2, and shoot with R2 when that man recognizes him, before he’s able to take a shot himself.
MEDAL REQUIREMENTS
Take your time here. You can’t take any damage if you want a gold medal, so shoot, then quickly take cover again. You also need to complete this mission with 80% accuracy – so don’t shoot unless it’s a sure shot. The reticle will be red if it’s set to hit.
Finish taking out the men – the O’Driscolls – with your friends, and don’t worry if one of them gets away.
Head inside with Dutch. Here, you’ll learn about your Health Core, which depletes over time. You must eat to restore it. Pick up some Oatcakes to the right of the entrance by holding square, then hold right on the d-pad to open your satchel. Eat an Oatcake to restore some of your Health Core.
- Higher quality food will restore more of your Health Core
*You’ll see in the bottom right corner of the screen when you’re able to take or interact with something nearby. Just walk close to things and look for the icon.
Clear out the food from the counter to your left upon entering, and search the medicine cabinet in the back by the wardrobe for medicine. Lastly, climb the ladder to find some revolver cartridges on the small table up there. You can explore more if you wish, but all you’ll find is a picture of the married couple who lives here, and a piece of jewelry on the table next to the bed.
*If Dutch calls to you, you’ll have to answer before you can continue looting.
MEDAL REQUIREMENT
Make sure to take everything you can in the house to complete a checklist objective – loot 6 or more items from Adler Ranch.
Once you leave, Dutch will instruct you to inspect the barn. Make a left and you’ll see it.
Be prepared for a jump scare… literally. One of the O’Driscolls will jump on you when you enter, knocking the gun out of your hand. Attack him with circle/B.
Dutch will watch you fight a bit, but you obviously have the upper hand, easily. Interrogate the O’Driscoll. Ask him questions and he’ll fess up easily.
Then, you’ll have the option to kill him, or spare him.
Be wary – if you hit him three times in this sequence, you will kill him.
After you’ve made your choice, pick up your gun and your hat. Then press square/x to calm the horse as you approach it, and pat it using the same button. Lead the horse out with triangle/Y.
As you approach the house, you’ll hear a woman scream. Turns out, the wife was still alive down in the cellar. The three of you will assure her, Ms. Adler, that she’s okay, and she comes with you to your people.
